Gardai catch drug-fuelled driver after late-night pursuit in Freshford, Co Kilkenny

A motorist with drugs in their system was caught by gardai after a late-night pursuit.

The driver turned away from a checkpoint in the village of Freshford in Co Kilkenny on Saturday night.

Gardai chased the motorist and pulled their vehicle over soon after.

The person behind the wheel subsequently tested positive for cannabis.

Officers also seized the car - which had no NCT.

A spokesman said: "Kilkenny Roads Policing Unit and Freshford Gardaí conducted a MIT checkpoint in Freshford last night when this vehicle turned away and tried to avoid Gardaí.

"The driver and vehicle were stopped after a brief pursuit. The car had no NCT and the driver tested positive for cannabis after an oral fluid test.

"The car was seized and the driver arrested for drug driving. A blood specimen was taken at the Garda Station. Never drive while intoxicated."
