Gardai called to the home of RTE star Gay Byrne warning him over terrifying death threats

Gardai called to the home of legendary RTE star Gay Byrne to tell him he was in danger.

Gay's wife Kathleen told of how gardai turned up at their north Dublin home after he regularly got threats from people claiming to be in the IRA.

The former Late Late Show host has previously revealed he got letters saying "we'll blow you asunder" after he refused to shake the hand of Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams.

His wife Kathleen Watkins has now said gardai called to their home in Howth saying they had heard "something was going to happen", Dublin Live reports.

"I remember the police arrived on a number of occasions because they’d heard something was going to happen," she told The Irish Sun.

"There were times when they were threats and all sorts of things.

"They did get information that (Gay was under threat) and they arrived at the house and they asked could they come in and look around the house.

"I knew one of them [the gardai], we called him Big Aidan, he was a huge man.

"He arrived at the door with a whole group of (gardai and I told him, 'There's no one here, we are perfectly safe and perfectly fine.'

"But he said, 'I'd love to come in and see around the house and make sure you are OK and that no one is holding you' — so he did that and it was fine.

"I'd have to say that the Gardai were magnificent."

Gay previously said he never took the threats seriously as "people who are going to kill you don't write to you beforehand, they just do it."
