Gardai called to Oberstown campus after juvenile offenders threaten staff and barricade themselves in kitchen

Gardai had to be called to Oberstown children's detention centre after a group of young offenders barricaded themselves in an area of the campus.

They were called to the campus yesterday at the request of staff when four of the juvenile inmates barricaded themselves into the kitchen area.

Along with local gardai, the public order unit also attended the scene.

It's understood that they threatened staff  in the incident which took place at around 8.30pm.

While there were no reports of any injuries and only minor damage was caused within the facility, an investigation has been launched into the incident.

A garda spokesman told Dublin Live: "At approximately 8.30pm on 6 May 2020 Gardaí from Balbriggan attended at Oberstown Children Detention Campus following a request from staff when a group of four inmates barricaded themselves into a kitchen area.

"Local Gardaí attended and with assistance from the Public Order Unit the matter was brought to a safe conclusion a short time later.
