Gardai called to disperse huge street party in Cork City as students return to college

Gardai were called to disperse a street party in Cork on Thursday night as huge crowds gathered.

Up to a thousand people were out around the Courthouse steps on Washington St with the section of road closed off at one stage as traffic needed to be managed.

Scores lined the roads egging on passing cars and banging on the sides of buses while some danced in the middle of the road in front of them - CorkBeo reports.

The crowd was slowly building over the night, and by the time the pubs closed it was bedlam with gardai moving in to disperse.

Two public order vans moved in while a squad car stopped just by the junction by Courthouse St and diverted traffic away from it all.

One doorman told CorkBeo they'd never seen such huge crowds there.

The party comes as students around the city celebrated freshers week with events being held for the college comeback.

Bars were packed around town and once the 11.30pm cut-off point hit people piled onto the streets which led to the scenes above, even thought the weather wasn't playing ball with their fun plans.

Next month bars will finally be allowed to go late again - with October 22nd the date set for the lifting of most remaining restrictions.
