Gardai called by lifeguard after nudist refuses to put on clothes at holiday hotspot

Gardai were called to a beach in Mayo this summer after a nudist was involved in a tense standoff with a lifeguard.

The woman, aged in her 20s, refused to put on clothes when asked at Keem Beach on Achill Island off the coast of Co. Mayo back in July.

The Irish Post reports that records released under the Freedom Of Information (FOI) act say the woman was naked for hours, with multiple complaints from parents.

The woman was paddle-boarding with two men and a dog when the lifeguard began whistling to get their attention.

After telling one of the men that this was not a nudist beach, they said they would pass on the message to the lady.

However, the woman refused to heed the warning and prompted the lifeguard to confront her himself.

The lifeguard says in the report: "I explained that it was illegal and that we’d now had several complaints. She reluctantly agreed and went back up to her towel and bags, where she made no effort to cover up or clothe herself.

"She remained on the beach, where she sunbathed for approximately an hour, still naked, and got back into the water on the stand-up paddle-board alone."

The gardai arrived shortly after and the woman agreed to cover herself.
