Gardai called to numerous shopping outlets over the weekend to ensure they were following Covid-19 restrictions.
Shops are allowed open across Ireland for essential reasons only, so even supermarkets are not allowed sell things like toys - according to Tanaiste Leo Varadkar.
And Gardai have been visiting stores across the country to check that these rules were being followed.
Sharing pictures on their social media, officers visited an unnamed Dunnes Stores at the weekend and found no breaches of the rules there.
A garda spokesperson said: "Gardaí conducting compliance checks on Retail Premises in support of the current Risk Level 5 #COVID19 measures.
"Under current measures retail businesses can stay open for essential retail purposes only. Working together we can all make a difference."
Gardai in Killarney also shared images as they checked in at a Tesco, Marks and Spencer and Mr Price outlet over the weekend.
Speaking about these rules on Sunday, Tanaiste Leo Varadkar said: "If you are a mixed retailer you should separate your stock and only sell items that are essential. If you are a big store that has groceries and clothes, you have to separate the clothes. General workwear is OK but not other clothing.
"We have been in touch with the Garda about that. If they are using PPE to sell other products then that is different.
"It's also unfair - think of all the small shops and retailers that have to close - it's unfair on those and it won't be allowed.
"Having engaged with the Department of Justice I am confident the law is strong enough."
