Gardai call on public to continue making 'right choices' as they issue final travel warning

As of Monday, motorists can travel between counties in Ireland but until then, the 20km travel limit is still in place.

Over the weekend, the Gardai will continue to monitor nationwide checkpoints as they maintain high visibility patrols across the country.

In a statement that was released this evening, An Garda Síochána have asked the public to continue making "the right choices" as they continue to find large groups meeting in house parties, social and outdoor gatherings etc.

At present, nearly 4,000 fines have been issued to people attending or organising house parties and gatherings.

To date, a total of 21,277 Covid-19 fines have been administered across the range of all Covid-19 breaches.

For those that are planning activities over the weekend, the Gardai have said: "Act responsibly and stay safe when planning activities – avoid large gatherings and meeting in groups."

Gardaí patrols will be monitoring public amenities, parks and beauty spots across the country this weekend.

Motorists are also being asked to please park legally when visiting these popular locations.

Speaking today, Deputy Commissioner of Policing and Security, Anne Marie McMahon has said: "Thanks to the hard work and sacrifice of so many, all the Covid-19 indicators are going in the right direction. However, as society starts to open up again, we can’t afford to be complacent.

"As we enjoy meeting up with more of our family and friends, and doing activities we haven’t been able to do for a while, please remember not to gather in large groups. Please maintain social distancing. Please do not hold or attend house parties. And keep washing your hands.”

In terms of the fines that have been issued for breaches of Covid regulations, the breakdown is as follows:

• 14,779 €100 fines for non-essential travel
