Gardai call for 24 hour armed support units to fight violent crime

Members of the gardai have called for a 24-hour armed units to tackle violent crime.

This armed support to fight organised crime and the threat posed by the New IRA.

The proposal will be put forth during the annual conference of the Garda Representative Association due to take place on Monday.

Resources, equipment, training, and accommodation have been listed as some of the major areas of concern for rank and file gardai.

Gardai call for compulsory retirement age to be extended beyond 60 years old

The rising numbers of ATM robberies have also been a cause for concern as gardai along the border suspect that members of at least one of the gangs were also involved in the murder of Detective Garda Adrian Donohoe during a raid at the Lordship Credit Union in 2013, RTE reports.

There have been demands for a 24-hour armed unit to be put in every garda division across the country.

GRA President Jim Mulligan told RTE’s Morning Ireland that an armed support unit in every division would "do away with the need for detective units to carry guns".

He added that more resources and better targeting of gangs is needed to fight the problem of ATM thefts.
