Gardai board Irish Rail trains to check for Level Five lockdown compliance

Gardai are today boarding trains to ensure people are only travelling for essential reasons.

Irish Rail said that officers are checking trains in Naas, Co Kildare to quiz passengers on why they are travelling.

Pictures show officers accompanying ticket officers on carriages.

This is procedure that is being carried out on train services across the country as the lockdown continues.

Irish Rail said: "Thank you to Gardai in Naas who are assisting with patrols on board services and stations today.

"Remember, travel is for essential workers only."

People are not allowed travel any further than 5km from their home unless for the following reasons;

There will be a penalty for movement outside 5 kilometres of home, with the following exceptions:

  • travel to and from work, where work involves providing an essential service
  • to attend medical appointments and collect medicines and other health products
  • travel to attend disability day services
  • travel to attend a court
  • for food shopping
  • to take school aged children to permitted training
  • for vital family reasons, such as providing care to children, elderly or vulnerable people, and in particular for those who live alone but excluding social family visits
  • for farming purposes, that is food production or care of animals
  • to attend a wedding or funeral
  • to visit a grave
