Gardai blast rule breakers in three counties as 5km rule flouted by hundreds

Gardai have blasted rule breakers in three counties over the weekend as they were forced to turn back hundreds of people beyond their 5km.

Gardai in the Wicklow division as well as the Laois and Offaly area have taken to social media to plead with people to follow the rules.

Officers in Wicklow issued 70 Fixed Payment Notices and turned back over 200 vehicles on Sunday.

A garda spokesperson said in a statement: "There was a noticable reduction in the amount of traffic in the uplands today.

"However, Gardaí on the various checkpoints report that they cautioned and turned back more than 145 cars and cyclists. 77 fixed charge penalties will be issued to others for more aggravated breaches of the regulations.

"These checkpoints will continue in support of the Covid 19 restrictions during the week and upcoming weekends."

And Gardai in Laois and Offaly said that people continue to ignore their advice as they issued more fines at the weekend.

A spokesperson said: "An Garda Síochána has repeatedly appealed to people to adhere to public health regulations and not to travel beyond 5km of their homes. An Garda Síochána has repeatedly advised people not to park illegally at public amenities as it could hinder access by emergency services.

"While the vast majority of public are compliant there still appears to be people who don't want to take that advice.

"Gardaí in Laois Offaly Division have issued Fixed Charged Notices to people who are well outside their 5km limit and turned back vehicles after issuing a caution to the drivers. Gardaí will again be on duty today supporting the Covid 19 regulations and helping protect our frontline hospital staff and the wider community."
