Gardai believe at least two killers involved in murder of Keith Branigan gunned down in Clogherhead, Co Louth

Gardai believe at least two killers were involved in the murder of Keith Branigan who was gunned down outside his mobile home on Tuesday afternoon.

The first to die in the notorious Drogheda gang feud was blasted as worked putting down decking at the Ashling caravan park in Clogherhead, Co Louth.

Supt Andrew Watters of Drogeda garda station described the attack as an "indiscriminate and callous" murder.

He revealed that at least two in the hit team who carried out the murder and two, and possibly three cars were involved in the assassination and getaway.

Supt Watters said the gunman was driven to the caravan park and escaped in the red Lexus  (05-C-24473) which was found burnt out at Whiteriver in Dunleer, Co Louth.

He said that after they set fire to the car they then transferred to a black Toyota Avensis, which was found in Ardee.

Cupt Watters said: “This was a particularly indiscriminate and callous act carried out in a very busy caravan park.

“There were a lot of families, women with young children close to the area of the shooting and some of these children were enjoying the last days of their summer holidays.

“This was not a drive by shooting. We are satisfied that a red Lexus car entered into the caravan park. The gunman approached the deceased and fired a number of shots at him.

“A number of stray shots caused damage to two cars in the carpark as well.

“The gunman then returned to the red Lexus car and we are satisfied that this car turned left and travelled in the direction of Terminfeckin.”

Supt Watters  issued an appeal in relation to the shooting itself and the two cars used in the killing.

He said gardaí also want to speak to anyone who may have seen any unusual behaviour in Clogherhead up to two days before the murder.
