Gardaí arrest woman over disappearance and murder of young couple five years ago

Gardaí investigating the disappearance and murder of young couple William Maughan and Anastasija Varslavane have arrested a woman.

The woman, who is in her mid-30s, was arrested on Saturday morning and is currently detained under Section 30, Offences Against the State Act, 1939 at Ashbourne Garda station.

William Maughan and Anastasija Varslavane were reported missing from the Gormanstown area of Co Meath on 14 April, 2015.

Maughan, who was from Tallaght, was 34. Anastasija Varslavane, 21, was originally from Latvia, but had lived in Ireland for several years prior to her disappearance.

The young couple had lived together for many years.

A garda spokeswoman said: "Gardaí investigating the disappearance and murder of William Maughan and Anastasija Varslavane in April, 2015 have made an arrest this morning, Saturday 30th January, 2021.

"The woman (mid 30s) was arrested this morning and is currently detained under Section 30, Offences Against the State Act, 1939 at Ashbourne Garda station. 

"Investigations ongoing."
