Gardai arrest two men in connection with bomb planted under PSNI officer's car in Belfast

Gardai have arrested two men in relation to a bomb that was found under a PSNI officer's car in Belfast last June.

Special detectives working closely with their northern counterparts today arrested two men in in their 40s and have detained them in a Dublin garda station.

A statement released this morning read: "Members from An Garda Síochána Special Detective Unit have this morning, Tuesday 20th August 2019 arrested two males in their 40s.

"The two men are being detained under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act at a Dublin Garda Station.

"The arrests are linked to enquiries being carried out by An Garda Síochána and the Police Service of Northern Ireland into the discovery of an under vehicle explosive device at Shandon Park Golf Club, Belfast on the 1st of June 2019."

Last June, a bomb was found under a serving policeman's car in Shandon Park Golf Club .

The bomb was "clearly intended to kill the police officer" according to PSNI Head of Terrorism Investigation Detective Sean Wright who blasted the attack saying it was "very fortunate" it was found before it exploded.

He said: "In placing such a device, terrorists have also put the officer's family, neighbours and members of the public at serious risk."
