Gardai arrest speeding motorist who was driving at 193km/h on M1

Gardai arrested a motorist who was breaking the speed limit by over 70km/h.

The driver was clocked speeding at 193km/h on the M1 motorway, breaching the 120km/h limit in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Posting to the official Garda Traffic Twitter account, a spokesperson said: "Gardaí detected a car travelling at a speed of 193km/h on the M1 in the early hours of this morning. Driver arrested and court proceedings to follow."

A number of speeding drivers were also nabbed in Cahir, Co Tipperary yesterday, with two clocked driving at 175km/h and 150km/h.

A garda spokesperson said:"Gardaí in Cahir detected a number of drivers speeding on the M8 today.

"One motorist at 175km/h and another at 150km/h were among the highest. Prosecutions commenced from the roadside using the Mobility App. With increase in traffic on our road network, please #slowdownsavelives."

Meanwhile, in Naas, Co Kildare, roads policing gardai discovered a driver on a learner permit who had no NCT or valid tax and a worn tyre.

And their passenger was disqualified from driving.

A garda spokesperson said: "A check using the Garda #MobilityApp revealed the passenger was disqualified from driving and not eligible as a qualified driver.
