Gardai arrest motorist speeding at 116km/h in 50km/h zone during heavy rain in Longford

Gardai arrested a motorist who was doing over twice the speed limit during very bad weather conditions last night.

The driver was clocked speeding at 116km/h in a 50km/h zone in Longford during a period of heavy rain with surface water on the road.

The man was arrested and taken to Longford Garda Station where he was charged with dangerous driving with a court date to follow.

Sharing a photo on Twitter, a garda spokesperson said: "Longford Roads Policing Unit detected a driver travelling at 116km/h in a 50km/h zone, heavy rain and a lot of surface water at the time.

"Suspect was arrested and taken to Longford Garda Station where he was charged with dangerous driving. Court to follow."
