Gardai arrest a man for gun possession in Kerry after seeing social media video

A man has been arrested over the possession of a gun after gardai became aware of a social media video showing a man firing a shotgun.

A male in his 20s was detained and a suspected firearm seized in Co Kerry on Wednesday.

Gardai made an arrest after becoming aware of a video of a young man with a firearm in December.

The arrested man has since been charged at Killarney Garda Station and will appear in court at a later date.

A spokesman said: "Gardaí have arrested and charged a man in his 20s in relation to the possession of a suspected firearm in December, 2019.

"Gardaí became aware of a video on social media which showed a man firing a shot from what is believed to be a shotgun.

"An investigation was carried out by Gardaí in Killarney and a man in his 20s was arrested yesterday, 8th January, 2020.

"The suspected firearm was also seized and will now be sent for examination.

"He was detained at Killarney Garda Station under Section 30 Offences Against the State Act, 1939 and has since been charged."
