Gardai arrest man over Christmas Day fire at home in Navan, Co Meath

A man has been arrested following a Christmas Day house fire in Co Meath.

The man is being quizzed over the blaze which broke out in Beechmount Estate, Navan at around 8am.

Gardai say they are investigating "all circumstances" surrounding the incident.

Emergency services rushed to the scene at around 9am. No one was in the house at the time.

A local fire crew brought the fire under control before gardai preserved the scene for an examination.

On Wednesday evening, gardai arrested a man, in his 30s, in connection with the investigation. He is being held at Navan Garda Station.

A spokesman said: "At approximately 9am Gardaí and local fire and emergency services attended the scene of a house fire at Beechmount Grove.

"No persons were home at the time of the fire and no one was injured. Two adjoining houses and their occupants were evacuated to safety.

"The fire was brought under control by fire services and the scene was preserved for examination by Garda scenes of crime officers.

"A man in his 30s has since been arrested and is currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 at Navan Garda Station.

"Gardaí are appealing to anyone with information to contact Navan Garda Station on (046) 903 6100 or the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111."
