Gardai arrest man in wooded area of Fermoy, Co Cork after suspect collected €125,000 worth of drugs

A man was arrested after he was caught collecting €125,000 worth of drugs in a wooded area of Co Cork.

Gardai carrying out a surveillance operation noticed the man arriving in the woods at Cullenagh, Fermoy on Saturday evening.

They later stopped and arrested the man, in his 20s, after seizing the large amount of suspected cocaine he had collected in plastic boxes.

A garda spokesman said: "As a result of a recent surveillance operation carried out by the Cork City Divisional Drugs Unit at a wooded area at Cullenagh, Fermoy, Cork, Gardaí were monitoring the area when they observed a man arrive at the location on Saturday 11th April 2020 at approximately 6:40pm.

"The man collected a quantity of suspected cocaine before being subsequently stopped by Gardaí.

"A number of plastic boxes were retrieved at this location, which on examination, were found to contain suspected cocaine (pending analysis) with an estimated value of approximately €125,000.

Side effects of taking cocaine

"The man aged in his early 20s was arrested at the scene. He is currently being detained under the provisions of Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act 1996 at Fermoy Garda Station. Investigations are ongoing."
