Gardai arrest man and woman as part of investigation into 'romance fraud' in Ireland

Gardaí have arrested two people as part of an ongoing investigation into ‘romance fraud’ in Ireland.

A man and a woman were taken into custody after it was discovered that a dating website defrauded €28,000 from a male member.

The money was reportedly laundered through the accounts of two people based in Tipperary and Dublin, while the man’s bank account was also used to launder the proceeds of a separate invoice redirect fraud, carried out on an Irish-based company.

The first arrest in relation to this crime was made on Thursday, July 22, 2021, when a man in his 20s was detained under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 in Tipperary Garda Station.

He was later released without charge and a file is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.

This morning, Monday, July 26, a second arrest was made on a female in her 40s in Dublin for offences contrary to Section 72 of the Criminal Justice Act, 2006.

She is currently detained in Finglas Garda Station under Section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act, 2007.

A vehicle was also seized during the arrest operation today.

Investigations are ongoing.
