An elderly man has been arrested in connection with the murder of a woman who disappeared nearly 35 years ago.
Kilkenny woman Marie Tierney was reported missing on October 22, 1984.
Her body was found on the Bleach Road in Kilkenny nearly two months later. The discovery sparked a murder investigation.
Gardai on Wednesday morning have arrested a man, in his 70s, in connection with the investigation. He is being detained at Kilkenny Garda Station.
A spokeswoman said: "Gardaí in Kilkenny investigating the murder of 34-year-old Marie Tierney in 1984 have this morning, Wednesday June 26 2019 arrested a man in his 70s."
Her car was found at Newpark on the day she was reported missing by her husband Jim.
A comprehensive search of the county was carried out before her body was found.
In October 2018, Marie's body was exhumed from Conahy graveyard and, after a postmortem, the remains were reinterred in the cemetery.
A spokeswoman added: "Marie’s body was discovered on the Bleach Road, Kilkenny on 21 December 1984.
"A murder investigation was launched and as a result of a thorough investigation a man in his 70s was this morning arrested in connection with this investigation.
"The man is currently detained in Kilkenny Garda Station under the provisions of Section 4 – Criminal Justice Act 1984."
Gardai previously said over 500 lines of investigative enquiry were opened and over 200 witness statements were recorded - but no arrests were made until now.
