Gardai arrest eight people after violent funeral brawl in Tuam, Co Galway

Gardaí have arrested eight people in relation to an incident of violent disorder in Co Galway.

Officers investigating the incident at Tuam Cemetery on September 22 conducted the successful operation on Monday.

The operation resulted in the arrest of seven men who range in age from their mid 20s to their mid 50s, and one woman in her mid 20s.

A garda spokesperson said the men and woman "are currently detained at various stations in the Galway Division under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984."

The arrests are believed to have come after a mass brawl erupted at a funeral being held in Tuam Cemetery.

Teresa Ward was being laid to rest when tensions rose, and a fight ensued.

Several people were injured in the incident, with a number of people receiving stab wounds.

Armed gardai and a helicopter were called to the scene to disperse the crowds.
