Gardai arrest driver with cocaine in system breaking speed limit at 181km/h on M9

A motorist with cocaine in their system was clocked travelling at 181km/h over the weekend.

The driver was stopped after smashing the 120km/h speed limit on the M9 on Sunday.

Gardai then made the motorist undergo a roadside drug test which they failed after testing positive for cocaine.

A garda tweet said: "A driver was caught doing 181kmph on the M9 this afternoon. When stopped a roadside drug test was administered which driver failed.

"Driver arrested with court proceedings to follow. Never drive under the influence."

It comes as drug driving in Ireland has soared by 80% since the lockdown was brought in - despite a massive 70% drop in traffic.

Gardai revealed the shocking statistics at the end of April as they warned road users there's a "greater chance" of being caught due to a rise in checkpoints.

Roads Policing Chief Paul Cleary said the level of intoxicated motorists has not dipped even though all pubs are closed.

Chief Superintendent, Mr Cleary said: "During the current lockdown period we have seen the volume of traffic on our roads decrease by up to 70%.

"Unfortunately, we are not seeing a corresponding reduction in the number of people being detected driving under the influence of an intoxicant - either drink or drug driving.

"Since the 28th of March, 490 have been detected driving whilst under the influence of an intoxicant despite the fact all pubs have been closed.

"Drug driving is of particular concern with an 80% increase in detections for people driving with the presence of controlled drugs in their system."
