Gardai arrest driver at checkpoint who was supposed to be self-isolating but 'needed wine'

Gardai have arrested a drunk driver who was supposed to be self isolating after they gave a ludicrous reason for being out.

The driver was stopped at a checkpoint in Clane this week by the Road Policing unit in Naas who discovered that the motorist should have been self isolating.

And upon quizzing why the person was out and about they found that the driver was not only over the limit but gave the ridiculous excuse that they 'ran out of wine' and went out to purchase more instead of isolating.

The driver was stopped by Gardai at a checkpoint implemented as part of Operation Fanacht which has seen increased road policing in line with Level Five Covid restrictions.

A garda spokesperson said: "Naas RPU on #OperationFanacht in Clane observed car trying to avoid checkpoint. Driver stopped and was arrested for DUI - tested at station and twice over the legal limit. Driver was supposed to be self isolating, ran out of wine and was stopped after purchasing more wine."

Recently, more than 50 motorists were fined for using their mobile phone while driving, speeding or refusing to use the seatbelt in a major operation on Tuesday.

Covid checkpoints continue to pop up on roads across the country in a bid to urge people to stay as local as possible.

Gardai are encouraging people not to travel out of their county unless it is for essential purposes and with major checkpoints on main routes, people using the roads are likely to face delays.
