Gardai announce major change to Covid checkpoints on busy N7 and M2 roads after traffic chaos

Gardai have made two major alterations to Covid checkpoints on two Irish motorways this morning.

As Gardai launched Operation Fanacht yesterday there was traffic chaos reported across the country as officers mounted thousands of checkpoints across the country.

The checkpoints come as the entire country was place under level 3 coronavirus restrictions.

Under Level 3 people have been urged not to travel outside of their counties unless it is for essential purposes.

And in a bid to curb travel Gardai yesterday launched 132 large scale checkpoints on main arterial routes around the country in addition to thousands of mobile checkpoints on secondary routes in towns and villages.

However there was widespread reports of traffic chaos on some of the busiest Irish roads. Large queues could be seen on the M50 and on the N7 on Dublin-Kildare border at Blackchurch.

In response Gardai have announced that they will be making changes to checkpoints both on the N7 and M2 to help ease any congestion.

Now a Heavy Goods Vehicle only lane will be made available which is aimed at keeping the flow of goods relatively smooth.

A garda spokesman said: "From 7am this morning, 8th October 2020, alterations have been introduced to two specific designated checkpoints on the N7 (Junction 6) and M2 (Junction 2) only.

"A new traffic layout has been introduced at these checkpoints which provides a dedicated HGV only lane to minimise delay or disruption to business distribution.

"Signage will be in place prior to reaching the checkpoints and the right hand lane (lane 3) will be available for HGVs only.

"We would ask all motorists to follow the signage and that HGV drivers reduce their speed as they approach the Garda checkpoints as they still may be required to stop."
