Gardai and five search teams called after Comeragh Mountains hike turns into nightmare

A walk on the Comeragh Mountains turned into a nightmare for two walkers on Wednesday evening when they became lost and disorientated.

Gardai and five teams from the South Eastern Mountain Rescue Association were tasked to the walkers after they received a call shortly after 5pm.

Mist had descended on the Waterford mountain leaving both disorientated and needing assistance.

After phoning the gardai, five teams were dispatched near the Coumshingaun loop.

After a long search the walkers were found safe and well - albeit cold - just before 9pm.

They were transferred back to their vehicle and everyone was off the mountain by 11pm.

South Eastern Mountain Rescue said: "Two walkers had become disoriented when mist came down as they were walking the Coumshingaun loop.

"Full team call out to Kilclooney Woods was issued. The first search party was deployed to search the South ridge at 19:07 with 4 other search parties following shortly. The walkers were located safe but very cold at 20:49.

"They were escorted off the hill and returned to their car in a SEMRA vehicle at 22:42. Search and Rescue Dog Association (Ireland) search dog Ziggy with handler Mick also joined the search. Due to the cloud cover it was not possible for a Coast Guard helicopter to assist on this occasion. Everyone safely off the hill and heading home by 23:00."
