Gardai and DSPCA swoop to rescue over 140 animals from North Dublin petting farm

Over 140 animals have been surrendered to the DSPCA from a North Dublin petting farm after concerns were raised for the animals' welfare.

The DSPCA and Gardai seized the animals and brought them to their shelter in Rathfarnham over a two-day period after initially being called out to the site last Wednesday.

31 dogs, 46 rabbits 9 guinea pigs, 6 geese, 37 chickens, 9 pigeons, 6 goats, 2 ponies and their foals and a heavily pregnant donkey were among the pets rescued.

The animals were all checked over by the DSPCA vets, where thankfully no major injuries were reported.

Most of the dogs seized were female and many were nursing puppies, as were many of the rabbits.

All of the dogs had matted coats, which were shaved clean by the groomers.

The DSPCA say they will be seeking new homes for the animals shortly, including launching a special appeal to re-home the dozens of rabbits, guinea pigs, chickens, and roosters.

They added: "Others animals that were surrendered included geese, pigs and a number of horses and donkeys which have been relocated to other Animal Charities.

"The DSPCA and Gardai will be seeking a prosecution under section 61 of the Animal Health and Welfare Act 2013.

"The DSPCA wishes to acknowledge and thank the Gardai for their vigilance and assistance in this matter."
