Gardai and DPD issue warning over package delivery scam that's catching people out

As always, December sees an abundance of packages being delivered over the busy Christmas shopping period but this year has seen extra demand for online deliveries due to COVID.

However, with this upsurge in demand comes greater risk and once again, Gardai are warning the public about the dangers of a phishing email that's currently in circulation.

In a statement, they said : "We have received reports over the past number of days from members of the public in relation to a phishing email that they have received which purports to be from DPD."

The contents of the email state that a package is being held at the depot until a small fee is paid to release it.

The Gardai warn: "Should you receive an email such as this which appears to be from any courier service, please do not pay the fee. Do not click on any links contained within the email and do not supply any personal/financial information. Simply delete the email."

If anyone has already been caught out by this scam, they're being encouraged to immediately alert Gardaí and also their respective banking institution.

With large volumes of money changing hands over the last few weeks, this alert is just the latest from a series of businesses and authorities.

Earlier this month, Bank Of Ireland issued a detailed explainer about the types of scams that they've been alerted to, while the National Lottery and a previous warning by the Gardai were also issued.
