Gardai and Coast Guard wade into sea to save beached whale dolphin in Donegal

An incredible video shows the moment two Donegal gardai pitched in with the Coastguard to save a beached whale dolphin.

Garda Brendan O'Connor and his appropriately-named colleague Sean Sharkey both rolled up their sleeves and trouser legs as they joined the rescue effort at Killahoe Beach.

The officers helped members of Mulroy Coastguard to carry the struggling mammal back into the water where it could return to safety.

The team of six slid a sheet under the stricken dolphin, picked up the sides and guided it back out into the sea, battling the waves as they went.

It took several attempts to get the animal back out to sea, a spokesperson for the Garda Review told The Irish Daily Mirror.

However, it's understood that the whale dolphin eventually made it back safely to its watery home.

Footage shared on the Garda Review Twitter account showed the dramatic rescue.

They wrote: "Gardaí Brendan O’Connor and Sean Sharkey assisting the Mulroy Coastguard team in the return of a beached Dolphin Whale to the sea. Incredible."

The Irish Coastguard also shared the footage, saying: "We always work closely with @GardaTraffic this was one of the more unusual situations, however."

The brave rescue was hailed online, with one person writing: "Great job lads, considering what ye are all dealing with right now."

Another quipped: "Could they not have used a whale barrow?"
