Garda watchdog raids home of officer as part of Paddy 'Pappy' Lyons Ballymun murder investigation

The Garda watchdog has raided the home of an officer as part of its investigation into the handling of a murder inquiry.

The Ombudsman confirmed last month it is probing if the force knew of threats to Paddy “Pappy” Lyons.

The father-of-two, who was 44, was shot up to five times in a targeted killing in Ballymun, North Dublin, on February 11.

Investigators executed a search warrant to enter the officer’s home and removed phones, sparking fury among gardai.

A senior source told Dublin Live: “GSOC has to carry out its investigation, but having a home raided in the middle of a murder enquiry isn’t going to help find Pappy’s killer.”

It is understood three officers were taken off the inquiry after an allegation they had been made aware of a threat to Mr Lyons’ life in the 24 hours before his death and did not tell detectives for four days.

And it is believed GSOC has already seized notebooks and documents from Ballymun station.

The officers have not been suspended.

A Garda Ombudsman spokesman told Dublin Live: “The GSOC investigation is ongoing and we will not be making any further comment at this time.”

Pappy Lyons was known to gardai for minor crimes including theft, public order and drug possession.

He had no involvement in gangland activity, but was a drug user and his death may have been linked to a debt.

But so far no arrests have been made in the investigation.
