Garda killed after being shot overnight in Castlerea, Co Roscommon

A garda has died after being shot in Co Roscommon overnight.

The officer was killed after receiving gunshot wounds during an incident in Castlerea shortly before midnight.

Gardai have confirmed the officer killed in the shooting was detective Colm Horkan from Charlestown, Co Mayo.

One man, in his 40s, has been arrested in connection with this investigation and is currently detained in Castlerea Garda Station.

A spokesman said: "It is with deepest sadness An Garda Síochána confirms the death of our colleague, resulting from fatal gunshot wounds received during an incident in Castlerea shortly before midnight on Wednesday 17th June 2020."

Gardai in Castlerea have launched a murder investigation.

It's understood the officer was shot with his own official gun.

A garda tweet said: "Due to an incident in Castlerea Co Roscommon late last night the town centre is currently closed to traffic, diversions are in place."

Minister for Justice Charlie Flanagan has described this as a "difficult" day for all gardai and their families.

He told Morning Ireland: "I want to express my heartfelt sympathy to the parents and family of the brave garda who died doing his duty serving his community and to the wider family of An Garda Síochána who will be heartbroken.

"Our gardaí work to keep Ireland safe at all times and this is a very difficult day for all of them and their families."
