Garda taken to hospital with concussion after being assaulted while on patrol in Dundalk

A Garda was left with a concussion and other injuries after being assaulted while on patrol on Saturday.

Gardai were carrying out a patrol in Dundalk when they arrested a man in relation to a small drugs seizure in the Glenwood area.

They then went to speak to another man in relation to the seizure before the man quickly became abusive and aggressive.

The thug then assaulted both Gardai on the scene before he was arrested.

One Garda was taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda where he was treated for concussion and cuts to his hands.

He has since been discharged.

The arrested man is currently in custody and is due to appear before the next sitting of a District Court.

A Garda spokeswoman said: "Gardai in Dundalk were on patrol in Glenwood, Dundalk when they arrested a man in relation to a small drug seizure.

"Gardai went to speak to a second man in relation to the seizure and arrest.

"The man became threatening and abusive towards the two Garda members during this interaction. The man proceeded to assault both members and was arrested at the scene. He was taken to Dundalk Garda Station where he was detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 and has since been charged.

"He remains in custody and is due to appear before the next sitting of a District Court, which is tomorrow morning, Monday 7th December 2020.

"One Garda was taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda where he was treated for concussion and cuts to his hands. He has since been discharged. The second Garda did not require medical attention.

"Investigations ongoing."
