Garda seize car after 'extreme hazard' sees driver fail to stop before interception on busy road

Gardai have warned drivers that anything that causes an 'extreme hazard' on the roads will see your car seiezed.

Which is exactly what happened to a motorist on Tuesday evening after they failed to stop for officers.

Initially, they had suspected that the car's lighting was off, but soon they realised there were far bigger problems.

You see, the reason the vehicle failed to stop for officers who were pursuing them was simple: they couldn't as their brakes didn't work.

A spokesperson explained: "Tipperary Roads Policing Unit intercepted this vehicle outside Thurles last night for defective lighting. Initially we thought it was failing to stop however we learned.. the brakes didn’t work!"

The car also had no insurance, no NCT and no valid tax cert.

The spokesperson continued: "Car impounded for query dangerous defect & prosecution to follow. A vehicle without brakes is an extreme hazard to other road users."

It is an offence to drive a car without displaying a National Car Testing Service disc, if the car is liable for testing. Offenders will face Class C fines, as well as penalty points.

Failure to have motor insurance or driving without insurance in Ireland is generally punishable by:

  • A fine of up to €5,000
  • 5 penalty points; and
  • At the discretion of the court, a term of imprisonment not exceeding 6 months.

And that's before we even get to the condition of the car.
