Garda Public Order Unit hit streets on last weekend of lockdown with one notable incident

Gardai were out in force across the cities of Ireland at the weekend enforcing lockdown rules for the last time this year.

Public Order Unit's were sent on foot patrols on the streets of Dublin, Cork, Galway and all of Ireland's big towns and cities.

Images were shared across the weekend on official social media platforms of the officers ensuring rules were being followed.

A spokesperson said of their Dublin patrols: "Gardaí have increased high visibility foot, car and bike patrols as we continue to engage, encourage, explain and, as a last resort, enforce, in relation to government regulations.

"Pictured are the Public Order Unit and uniform Gardaí from Pearse Street and the Bridewell Garda Stations on duty tonight."

They added regarding a Cork operation: "Gardaí from Unit C, Anglesea St out on patrol this evening.

"Our focus remains keeping people safe by supporting public health measures to further reduce the spread of #COVID19 Please do not gather in groups and limit your contact with others."

One incident of note was South William Street in Dublin's City Centre being closed off for a time due to large crowds.

Officers took the decision to shut the busy area on Saturday night as a precaution due to the numbers of people present.

Garda patrols will continue to be carried out once Ireland enters Level Three with people still not allowed leave their county.
