Garda praised for 'heroic' response in viral video after mask incident at Dublin count centre

The Garda unit that were stationed at the count centre for Friday's Dublin Bay South by-election have been widely praised after candidate Dolores Cahill attempted to enter the centre without a face covering.

Ms Cahill obtained just 169 first-preference votes before being eliminated on the third count in the race which was won by Ivana Bacik for Labour.

But there was drama far before that as the UCD professor attempted to enter the centre without a mask.

The Garda unit, led by Sergeant Hugh Shovlin, refused to let her in, which Ms Cahill claimed was against her democratic right.

A video of the incident went viral on Friday, where Ms Cahill made a number of claims which were instantly refuted by Sgt Shovlin.

A longer clip uploaded to YouTube shows that Cahill attempted to make a citizens arrest of Sgt Shovlin, who continued to refute the claims she was making to the camera.

A tweet from the official Garda account on Friday evening read: "An early start and long day for Sgt Hugh with Gardaí Stephen & Anthony from Donnybrook Station - on duty today at the Dublin Bay South by-election Count Centre in the RDS"

And people in the replies were gushing over the actions of the unit.

Panti Bliss said: "Garda Hugh "no 'e'" Shovlin has done more for the Gardaí than a million Jerusalem videos."

While RTE reporter Fergal Bowers added: "Garda Hugh Shovlin, Donnybrook Dublin, is now more well-known than David Beckham."

Another user had a specific request for the Donnybrook sergeant, asking: "Are we allowed to send Sgt Hugh ‘No E’ Shovlin a drink or pizza to Donnybrook Garda Station? He has made me laugh an awful lot this evening"

While a fourth said: "Sgt Hugh "no 'e'" Shovlin is a hero and has a level of patience that I could not manage in a million years."
