Garda lockdown powers 'inappropriate', say human rights group

Garda powers brought in at the start of lockdown are inappropriate and must be scrapped, a human rights group insisted yesterday.

The Irish Council For Civil Liberties said the laws are “unworkable” as the country prepares for phase two of reopening.

The call comes as the Government must decide if it is necessary to extend the powers past Monday.

The ICCL’s executive director Liam Herrick said: “At this point in the public health response, we believe there is no evidence that criminalisation and prosecution in relation to public health advice is justified or likely to be effective.

“This is the moment when public health advice should be separated from criminal law.”
