Garda investigation underway after 'dangerous and reckless act' delays Dublin to Westport train

A Garda investigation is underway after an incident described as being "dangerous and reckless" delayed a Dublin train for almost one hour over the weekend.

The Dublin to Westport train was stopped for 45 minutes after a car stupidly drove through a level crossing at Knockcroghery, Roscommon on Saturday around 10am.

The driver is said to have smashed into the first barrier, paused at the second one before quickly performing a three-point turn and heading back in the direction where it came.

Speaking to Mayo's Midwest Radio, Irish Rail spokesperson Jane Cregan said that "it was an extremely dangerous and reckless act."

Anyone with information is being urged to contact Gardai as they look to track down the driver.

This comes as Irish Rail confirmed it is looking for passionate people to join their growing customer service team.

They're looking for 50 new onboard customer service officers across their national rail network.

The job is perfect for motivated workers with a passion for good customer service.

Full training will be provided to the successful candidates, who should display skills in problem solving, numerical ability and IT proficiency.

Chief Executive Jim Meade said: The recruitment of Onboard Customer Service Officers is part of our ongoing programme of enhancing customer service, and ensuring that all customers receive the care and support needed when they travel with us.

"Iarnrod Eireann is experiencing record demand, and with our investment plans we are set to expand greatly in the years ahead, meaning not only is this an excellent opportunity in itself, but it will provide a strong career path within our company.”
