Garda hunt underway to find heartless armed thugs who destroyed Memorial Wall in Glasnevin

Heartless armed thugs are said to be behind the vandalism of the Memorial Wall in Glasnevin.

The wall - which commemorates those who died in the Irish Revolution in the 1916 Easter Rising and Civil War in 1923 - was destroyed in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

It is understood that sledgehammers were used to smash parts of the wall with those behind the damage also throwing paint on it destroying the names of some of the people who died in battle.

Gardai are currently examining CCTV footage of the incident which is the second of its kind since it was unveiled in 2016.

In a statement to Dublin Live, a Garda spokesman said: " We are investigating an act of criminal damage that occurred at Glasnevin Cemetery on Tuesday 4th February at approximately 3:40am.

"The memorial wall suffered significant damage during the incident. No arrests have been made and investigations are ongoing."
