Garda horses to throng Saggart area with warnings issued to locals as tensions rise

Garda horses will take to the streets of a south Dublin village on Friday evening increasing patrols for three hours as part of a new initiative.

The elevated garda presence will start in Saggart village and continue through to Crosforge and Drury into Millrace.

They will then move along the walkway to Rathcoole Park and back.

It is expected they will be on the streets from 6-9pm.

The local residents' association issued a warning to locals about the patrol:

They said: "Keep an eye out. Great to have increased garda visibility in the area."

When asked about the heightened patrols, a Garda spokesperson said "An Garda Síochána does not comment on operational matters".

The capital has been plagued by weekend violence over the past month.

Last Saturday, three people were stabbed over the course of the hour, raising concerns about knife crime in the city.

Fine Gael TD for Rathdown Neale Richmond has suggested the idea of knife amnesty to combat the violent scenes happening in Dublin.

This would mean that people could surrender their weapons to gardai with no questions asked.

Street fights and other anti-social behaviour have also been rampant in Dublin as the country reopens post-lockdown.
