Garda helicopter and multiple cars brought on high speed chase by driver in Laois

The Garda helicopter and multiple cars were brought on a high speed chase through Laois on Tuesday.

Officers were alerted to a "dangerous driver" on the N80 with units responding to the scene in the early afternoon.

After a chase along the main road between Portaloise and Stradbally the air support unit was called into action.

The driver was eventually stopped by gardai using a stinger device - more commonly known as spikes - to flatten the vehicles tires.

A man was arrested at the scene in connection with the incident and has since been charged.

A garda spokesperson said: "Laois Roads Policing Unit arrested the driver of this vehicle today after it failed to stop and was involved in multiple Dangerous Driving incidents along the N80 between Portlaoise and Stradbally this afternoon.

"A Stinger device was deployed in Stradbally Town which successfully deflated the front tyres on the vehicle.

"The Garda Helicopter also assisted local units in bringing this incident to a safe conclusion. The driver was processed at Portlaoise and has been charged to appear before Portlaoise District Court.

"Members of the public who witnessed these incidents can contact the Roads Policing Unit at Portlaoise Garda Station on 0578674100."
