Garda Commissioner and Justice Minister praise brave officers after two gardai injured in Blanchardstown shootout

The Garda Commissioner and the acting Justice Minister have praised the brave officers who responded after two gardai were injured in a shootout in Blanchardstown.

Commissioner Drew Harris also praised in particular the two detectives who were the first ones on the scene in Whitechapel.

Several garda cars, trucks, and personnel flooded the area in response to reports of a man firing an automatic rifle out of his window.

Backup quickly rushed to the scene after one officer was reportedly shot in the hand, with another shot in the foot.

Both officers' were transported to nearby Connolly Hospital, and their injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

A machine gun and a pistol were recovered at the scene after the tense standoff that lasted a number of hours.

Harris said: "I want to commend all the Gardaí involved in securing a successful outcome to this firearms incident.

"In particular, the bravery of the two detectives who were first on scene. This was another in a long line of examples of Gardaí putting themselves on the line to keep people safe. I want to wish them a speedy recovery."

Minister Heather Humphreys also commended the officers and urged anyone with information to contact Blanchardstown Garda station.

She said: "My thoughts are with the two members of An Garda Síochána who sustained injuries while responding to an incident in Blanchardstown this evening, and with their families.

"I have been in contact with the Garda Commissioner this evening, and I am relieved to hear that the situation was resolved following negotiation. I want to commend all of the Gardaí who were involved in ensuring there were no further injuries.

"Shocking incidents such as this remind us of the dangers the men and women of An Garda Síochána face every day. We can never take for granted their bravery and the dedicated service they provide to our communities.

"We must always remember that in wearing the uniform and serving the Irish people, they place our protection and their duty to the State above their own safety.

"An investigation into the incident is now underway and I urge any member of the public with any information or footage to contact Blanchardstown Garda Station.”
