Garda checkpoints today: Official warning for road users and where you'll find them

Gardai are warning that they are again setting up high visibility checkpoints across the country today as part of Operation Fanacht.

Officers will be positioned on the main routes out of most counties as they attempt to stop people leaving their county and breaking level three rules.

Major traffic jams have resulted from some of the checkpoints including on the N4 in Dublin.

And Gardai are again warning they will be out on all of these main routes.

A spokesperson said: "Garda checkpoints will continue to be conducted on main routes across the country today, in support of the Government's public health measures.

"Gardaí are encouraging people not to travel out of their county unless it is for essential purposes."

Dozens of checkpoints have been setup in recent days with each car stopped and asked a number of questions.

There are the queries that will be put to you if you are stopped on the way out of the county;

  • Where are you going? It's against new rules to leave your county, so the first question is where you are travelling too.
  • Do you have a letter from work? All essential workers should have been given a letter from their employer which permits them to travel around - it's important you bring this with you if you have one.
  • Where do you live? Gardai will ask where you are travelling from to check if you are within your county, keep in mind they can check within less than a minute by your reg the address where the car is registered.
