Garda Checkpoints: The most common rules broken by Irish drivers as over 85,000 fines issued

According to the latest Roads Policing statistics, Irish drivers are being caught out by gardai for breaking the same few common rules of the road.

The most frequent offence so far in 2021 has been speeding, followed by the use of a phone while driving - both of which carry fines and penalty points on discovery.

A total of 86,220 Fixed Charge Notices have been issued in 2021 so far.

Of that number, a staggering 72,240 fines were issued to drivers speeding on roads across the country.

The month of July saw the most tickets handed out as over 17,000 people were caught out by speed cameras and gardai on patrol.

If caught breaking the speed limit in Ireland, you could face a fixed charge fine of €80, together with 3 penalty points.

A garda spokesperson said; “A speed limit is not a target. It is simply the maximum speed you are legally entitled to drive at on a stretch of road.

“You must drive at a speed appropriate to road and weather conditions, volumes of traffic present, and the likelihood of hazards.”

Meanwhile, more than 10,000 people have been hit with fines for using their mobile phones while driving this year alone.

If caught on the phone, you face a fixed charged notice of €60 and 3 penalty points on your driving licence.
