A young driver was busted by gardai overnight on Wednesday after being stopped at a routine checkpoint in South Dublin.
According to a report from officers, the vehicle owner was in breach of four Irish laws, and has since had their car seized.
As well as this, the learner was issued a fixed charge notice, and will be due to appear in court soon.
The checkpoint was being conducted on Grove Road in Terenure when the driver was pulled.
Very quickly, it was discovered that they were an unaccompanied learner, and as things progressed, it was found that he had no insurance, tax or NCT.
In a post on Twitter, Gardai confirmed: “While conducting a checkpoint on Grove Road, Terenure Gardaí seized this vehicle as the driver had no insurance, no tax and no NCT.

“Driver was also an unaccompanied learner. FCNs and court proceedings to follow.”
The public is reminded that the standard rules for drivers who have yet to pass their driving test are as follows:
- You must always have someone with a full driving licence in the car with you when you are driving on a learner permit. This person must have had their driving licence for at least 2 years. If the Gardaí stop you, and you are not accompanied by a qualified driver, they can detain the car
- You must display L-plates to the front and rear of the vehicle at all times while driving. The plate should be a red ‘L’ on a white background and should not be less than 15cm high with a border of at least 2cm
- You must adhere to a reduced drink driving limit and penalty point disqualification threshold
- You must not drive on a motorway
- You must not to draw a trailer
- You must not act as an accompanying driver
- You must not carry other people for reward
If a learner driver is detected driving unaccompanied faces an €80 fine and two penalty points if paid within 28 days, a €120 fine and two penalty points if paid within the next 28 days, and €120 and four penalty points if convicted in court.
The owner of a vehicle who allows an unaccompanied learner or unlicensed driver to drive their vehicle is liable to have their vehicle seized by the Gardaí and could face a fine of up to €1,000.
