Garda checkpoints: Officers make arrest after catching car going over 200km/h during Storm Barra

A motorist has been arrested after being caught going over 200km/h while driving during Storm Barra.

The shocking incident was clocked by a Garda road unit in Kilkenny while set up on the M9.

The M9 has a speed limit of 120km/h - but the Audi driver was going 201km/h.

A Garda spokesperson said: "Couldn't help thinking of the Hare from the 'Tortoise and the Hare' fable as our Roads Policing Unit clocked this Audi doing 201kmh on the M9 today.

"The Hare in this case was arrested and charged with Dangerous driving, Court to follow. The Tortoise, well we've no idea, probably thought the speed limit of 120kmh was worth following."

People were furious in the comments about the reckless driver.

One wrote: "Just to put that into perspective...this car was travelling 111 kilometres per hour FASTER than me in my truck doing it's max speed (90 km/h) If he lost control coming up behind me God help us. There are plenty of other hazards out there without having to allow for this madness."

A second added: "Imagine they crashed at 200km........ they'd literally be mashed potato. Like no matter how good a driver you think you are, you're not 200km on an open road good and you aren't psychic, there could be anything waiting for you a few miles down the road."
