Garda checkpoints Ireland: Workplace interviewer questions motorists about job at major check

Motorists were quizzed about their job by a Workplace Relations Commission officer at a major checkpoint in Kildare on Wednesday.

Gardai set up a multi-agency checkpoint on a busy road in Naas where drivers were checked for numerous offences.

The Workplace Relations Commission officer asked those passing through what their job was and if it was deemed essential while giving workers their rights.

A spokesperson for the Gardai said there were a number of offences detected but none for workplace issues.

The spokesman said: "Roads Policing Unit Naas performed Multiagency Checkpoints with its Road safety Partners the RSA.

"Also in attendance was an Officer from The Workplace Relations Commission (WRC) carrying out routine roads employee interviews in relation to employment rights compliance and compliance with Covid 19 return to work protocol."

As it stands in Level Five, people are only allowed to leave their 5km from their home for the following reasons;

  • to shop for essential items
  • travel to and from work, where work involves providing an essential service (see below)
  • to attend medical appointments and collect medicines and other health products
  • for vital family reasons, such as providing care to children, elderly or vulnerable people, and in particular for those who live alone, as part of an extended household but excluding social family visits
  • to attend a wedding or funeral
  • for farming purposes i.e. food production and/or care of animals
  • to visit a grave
