Garda checkpoints Ireland: Taxi driver arrested after being stopped by officers

Gardai were busy over the weekend conducting checkpoints on several Irish roads.

Officers in Co Kildare made a number of stops and seized several vehicles while carrying out checks in Naas on Sunday night.

They seized four vehicles, including two taxis that were uninsured and a car belonging to an unaccompanied learner driver.

Gardai also arrested a taxi driver who tested positive for Benzodiazepines which are a type of sedative medication.

Meanwhile, Naas Roads Policing Unit also carried out speed checks in north Kildare yesterday.

They detected several motorists who were speeding, including one driver who was found travelling at 124kph in an 80kph zone.

Fixed Charge Penalty Notices were issued to all those caught speeding.

Gardai in Waterford also issued a fine to a motorist caught travelling at 145kph in a 100kph zone yesterday.

At another checkpoint on the Finglas Road, gardai stopped a car and discovered that the driver was unaccompanied and they admitted to having no insurance.

Roadside tests for drugs were carried out and the driver was arrested.

Gardai said that a fixed charge notice and summonses will follow.

In another incident in Waterford over the weekend, gardai had a lucky escape after they narrowly avoided a collision.

While on mobile patrol, members from the Waterford roads policing unit encountered a car on their side of the road which caused them to veer to avoid a collision.

The vehicle was stopped and the driver was spoken to.

It emerged that the driver was an unaccompanied learner who failed a roadside drug test.

They were subsequently arrested and the vehicle was seized.
