Garda checkpoints Ireland: String of offences as officers carry out multi-agency checkpoint

A Garda operation conducted by the Naas Roads Policing Unit saw several vehicles being seized for a number of different issues over the weekend.

The multi-agency checkpoint was conducted with the RSA, HAS and customs on Monday.

Gardai seized several vehicles under the Road Traffic Act being driven by unaccompanied learner drivers.

Other vehicles were seized for having no tax or insurance and for having excessively worn tyres.

One incident occurred when gardai were travelling along the N7 on Sunday when a vehicle overtook the garda car travelling at 135kmph in a 100kmph speed zone.

The car was then stopped, and Gardaí found a learner driver was driving the vehicle.

The driver had no L-plates on display and was unaccompanied. On top of that, the vehicle also had no tax, NCT or insurance.

Gardai then seized the vehicle and issued a Fixed Charge Penalty Notice. The driver is due to appear in court.

Another incident saw officers stop a van with blacked-out windows on the M7.

Gardai conducted a Tintman check which revealed that the Light Transmission Level in the vehicle was only 21%.

This was, by a considerable distance, lower than the minimum requirement of 65%.

After using their new Garda mobility app, Gardaí found that the driver was disqualified.

The vehicle was seized, and the driver was arrested at the scene.

Gardaí in Kildare had a very busy weekend as they encountered many speeding incidents in the Kilcock area, where one motorist was found to be travelling at 84kmph in a 50kmph speed zone.

People have been reminded to remain cautious on the roads and not to take unnecessary risks when travelling.
