Garda checkpoints Ireland: Outrageous video shows colossal delays on Naas Road with 8km tailbacks reported as Covid operation reintroduced

Here is bizarre footage which shows severe delays on the Naas Road this morning as Operation Fanacht was reintroduced as part of Level 3 restrictions.

The outrageous two-minute video shows the busy stretch of tar turning into a commuter's nightmare as streams of cars, vans and trucks are left at a standstill while Gardai carry out extensive checkpoints causing massive tailbacks.

Reports this morning outlined that there were 8km queues in some parts of Dublin as people made their way to work in the capital on day 1 of the nationwide Level 3 lockdown.

The outraged motorist was luckily heading in the opposite direction but was astounded by the backlogs blasting it a "country gone mental".

You've been warned, cover your ears because there's a few curses thrown into this rant.

Speaking in the video, he says: "This is all the way down, look, Naas Road, holy s***.

"That's the road. At half 9 in the morning. F****** country has gone mental. People in their cars and trucks, look. That has literally been like that from Naas.

"Just listening to the news about Spain, you can go to the cinema, restaurants and bars staying open until 11. You can walk around the city, the whole city, that's like Dublin I suppose too.

"We'll all be here for months like this...while Europe has different measures.

"That's what the traffic looks like, look, all the way down. There you go, all the way down.

"What a f****** joke. Three checkpoints on the roundabouts this morning in Naas. But you can have a bleeding banger party until 6am in Dublin if you want, no problem.

Roisin Shortall speaks to the media at Leinster House about the controversy surrounding a Government decision to ignore public health advice and move to Level 3 of their Covid-19 plan

"You just can't go to work or bring your kids to school."

Speaking about the second coming of the operation, Gardai said: "We have re-commenced Fanacht as a nationwide policing operation focused on supporting public compliance with public health measures.

"People are being encouraged not to travel out of their county unless for essential reasons."

There will be more than 130 Garda checkpoints across main arterial routes in a bid to keep people in their county.

However, officers will not be given additional powers to enforce the higher level restrictions.

The daily checks will continue for three weeks, in line with the Government’s plans to escalate the country to Level 3.

Commissioner Harris said gardai will patrol motorways, particularly around Dublin, to try and limit people’s movements.
