Garda checkpoints Ireland: Officers seize car and arrest learner driver after four offences in one go

Gardai at a checkpoint on Saturday evening got more than they bargained for when flagging down a learner driver - arresting the motorist and impounding their car.

Officers regularly set up checkpoints on busy roads to ensure that motorist comply with the rules of the road.

However, for this driver on Saturday in Clontarf, the night before Halloween took a horror turn, when they broke four of those rules, including a major law, in one go.

A Garda spokesperson explained: "This car was stopped at Saturday night MIT checkpoint on Alfie Byrne Road by DMR Roads Policing Division.

"Motorist had no insurance, tax or NCT and was driving on a learner permit unaccompanied.

"They were arrested after failing roadside drugs test for cannabis. Car was impounded."

Meanwhile, a woman in her 50s has died after being involved in a late night car crash in Dublin.

Emergency services rushed to the scene of the collision involving a pedestrian and car at around 1.45 am on Davitt Road, Drimnagh, Dublin 12.

DublinLive say that the pedestrian, a woman understood to be in her 50s, was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later.

Her body has since been removed to the Dublin City Morgue, Whitehall where a post-mortem examination will be carried out.
