Garda checkpoints Ireland: Officers issue major warning to drivers as over 100 motorists fined

Gardai have issued a major warning to avoid parking illegally at public amenities after more than 100 people received fines.

Officers in the Wicklow division of the force also had to tell more than 200 motorists to turn back and issued them with a caution.

They warned that illegal parking can be dangerous as emergency services are unable to pass and access the area.

Gardai also added that the current Level Five restrictions prohibit non-essential travel of more than 5km from home.

Thousands of officers will be manning checkpoints up and down the country as part of the public health measures.

A Wicklow Garda spokesman said: "An Garda Síochána has repeatedly appealed to people to adhere to public health regulations and not to travel beyond 5km of their homes.

"An Garda Síochána has repeatedly advised people not to park illegally at public amenities as it could hinder access by emergency services.

"While vast majority of public are compliant there still appears to be people who don't want to take that advice.

"Yesterday, Gardaí in the Wicklow Division issued over 100 Fixed Charged Notices and turned back 200+ vehicles after issuing a caution to the drivers.

"Gardaí will again be on duty today supporting the Covid 19 regulations and helping protect our frontline hospital staff and the wider community."
